Academic institutions used to hire guest lecturers on arcane or cutting edge topics, but overall, colleges were wed to the professor as the expert. Increasingly, today’s business schools use coaches and other outside experts to supplement their teaching staff and widen their students’ exposure to expertise outside the campus gates.
When you are earning your eMBA, you may have the opportunity to enjoy a guest lecture or two, but you may also be fortunate enough to receive coaching from a world-class business coach, or have access to career coaches and professional resume writers through your b-school career centre.
Take advantage of every opportunity to consult with both your professors and these outside experts. Often, they are hired by schools because of their experience and skills that you are then able to use to assemble a stellar resume, prepare for your next job search, or strategize your next few career moves to move you toward your ultimate goal.
I have been pleased to be recognized by a growing number of schools and organizations for my expertise in resume writing, job search preparation, executive career coaching, and more. This has benefitted eMBA students on 3 continents, but it also increases my ability to make connections on behalf of these students. I’m now able to facilitate meetings all over North America, London, Paris, and Singapore. The wider my travels and deeper my experience, the more value I bring to the table.
So, as an eMBA candidate, if you find that you have access to outside experts, reach out and make that connection and put it to work for you. Take advantage of the additional outside expertise your school provides. You have everything to gain!
