One of the best ways to ensure that your career is a smooth progression from one great job to the next is to make connections with the right recruiters. This is especially true at the executive level, where many jobs aren’t publicized as open until after they’re filled! What makes a recruiter right for you? You’re looking for one who specializes in your industry, has a vast array of connections in your field and related fields, and one who takes an interest in you.
Specialties. Recruiters or Executive Placement agencies will often specialize in a single industry or in a selection of related fields. It’s important to attend networking events for your field and meet the recruiters or save a card from a firm that serves your industry. Or ask your executive MBA learning cohort, or alumni in your b school directory. They’ll have knowledge of the recruiters with the most connections and the most relevant connections for placing you in the right job. Going global? Connections. You’re looking for a recruiter who networks in person, online, and stays in touch. Sure, the calls about “I’ve got this position, do you know anyone who’s right for it” can get old, but it means they’re actively connecting on a client’s behalf. Wouldn’t it be great to harness that energy to YOUR next career move? Also, ask around for referrals to great recruiters. Interest. Knowing a great recruiter is only good if they’re interacting with you. Offer value to the relationship; connect job seekers with your favourite recruiter and let them know about positions coming open in your current organization. Offer introductions during networking events. Recruiters are all about networking, so the more value you offer, the more often you’ll come to mind!
