This is especially true at the executive level, where many jobs aren’t publicized as open until after they’re filled! What makes a recruiter right for you? You’re looking for one who specializes in your industry, has a vast array of connections in your field and related fields, and one who takes an interest in you.
Specialties. Recruiters or Executive Placement agencies will often specialize in a single industry or in a selection of related fields. It’s important to attend networking events for your field and meet the recruiters or save a card from a firm that serves your industry. Or ask your executive MBA learning cohort, or alumni in your b school directory. They’ll have knowledge of the recruiters with the most connections and the most relevant connections for placing you in the right job. Going global? Connections. You’re looking for a recruiter who networks in person, online, and stays in touch. Sure, the calls about “I’ve got this position, do you know anyone who’s right for it” can get old, but it means they’re actively connecting on a client’s behalf.
