More of my eMBA clients are choosing to open their post-graduate job search up to the global job market. They’re certainly qualified! In addition to becoming aware of different business etiquette, handshakes, and customs in the countries they’d like to work, I focus on helping them create an international resume.
What are hiring influencers looking for in an international resume? Very much the same list of qualities, knowledge, and experience an organization that operates in the global marketplace is seeking!
Points to highlight on every international resume:
Cultural awareness and sensitivity. It isn’t just what you already know, hiring influencers are looking for executives who are aware of what they may NOT know, and are willing to do the research to interact comfortably and appropriately anywhere they’re sent.
Flexibility. Do you have experience in other cultures in a professional or volunteer capacity? Your eMBA experiences will be key here, so make sure your degree is highlighted appropriately.
Language. Are you fluent in two or more languages? This is a huge selling point for an international resume, be sure to emphasize it!
Know your target market:
Highlight skills, education, or experience in short supply in your target market. That scarcity can range from the ability to represent the organization in your native country’s market, an engineering degree, experience managing logistics, or something more esoteric. Do your research and customize your resume for the market.
Customize your resume to emphasize what your target market values. Japanese employers value strong teamwork and collaboration skills. South African employers place great emphasis on higher education, such as your eMBA. German hiring influencers value precision and concise communication. Knowing your market allows you to offer hiring influencers there the information most important to them.
