Is Ten Years Too Long in One Job?

July 10, 2020 by Martin Buckland Leave a Comment

I’ve been with my company for 10 years. Is that too long?

Hi, I’m Martin Buckland. I help senior executives reach their career goals.

So the question is I’ve been with my company over 10 years…as a career coach can you advise me if that is too long?

I would say a resounding yes, far too long. My father in his generation stayed in his job all his life. One company and two or three positions were the norm.  That is not acceptable today because executive recruiters and other decision-makers in your career are looking for you to move around, to shift around every three, four, or five years. You should not quit just because you’ve been there for 10 years…that would be a bad move. You should quit when you have another opportunity.

If you realize you’ve been with your company far too long, what can you do?

I would suggest you see a career coach or a resume writer; somebody who could help nurture and coach you along to the next opportunity. Get a career strategy, an aggressive career strategy. You have your resume, rewritten and performance-driven, ATS friendly, and you complete your LinkedIn profile to the maximum. Fill it right out. It’s there waiting for you. Be active, on social media because you are selling yourself. And then when the time is right offers will start coming in and you should sign that offer for what is, hopefully, your dream job. You are then in a position to hand in your notice and move on. After 10 years to a fresh, more exciting job.

You have all the information. Are you ready to move after 10 or 9 or 12 years? Have you got your resume ready? Have you got your LinkedIn profile ready?

I’m Martin Buckland. I’m an executive career management practitioner. I can help you get your dream job. I am passionate about helping you reach your career goals. I have an offer for you; a free resume critique and LinkedIn audit. I will offer you a no-obligation, no sales pitch, LinkedIn audit and resume critique. However, I do warn you, I am realistic. I will say it as it is, I am tough because I want you to learn what I’m going to tell you and I will remove all the red flags for you so you have a complete bank of green flags, so it will be clear sailing if you have to go into career transition. Are you interested? If so, email me in the message section on LinkedIn. Or send me an email using the link posted below.
