Today we’re discussing resume writing, specifically, what’s the best format to deliver your resume?
The question today is, should I deliver my resume/CV in Microsoft Word, or PDF format. This you show chance to open up dialogue, to befriend the hiring manager. What I suggest is, if you’re applying for a job online, you call the HR department of that particular company and ask them how they would like it delivered. Each HR department and each recruiter, or each HR executive have their own way of wanting it to be delivered. But here’s a tip for you. If you’re sending it in Microsoft Word format, don’t deliver it in .docx file format, deliver it in .doc because it helps with the scanning machinery. And it’s more accessible because .doc has been around a lot longer than .docx.
So, open up dialogue with the hiring authority and ask them how they would be like it delivered. Don’t worry about your resume being altered. When I first started in this business 26 years ago, so many people were worried about, sending their resume to an executive recruiter or an HR professional that they would alter it. They don’t do that anymore. So it will be delivered in either .doc (MS Word) or PDF format.
